Artists as Advocates

New York artist Kelsey Montague has created a series of Haiti pen and ink drawings exclusively for GVN and GVNF. Montague’s unique work incorporates ‘drawings within drawings’, giving each print multiple meanings, emotions and perspectives. Her Haiti drawings were inspired by both the plight of the Haitian people and by their indomitable spirit. The common theme running throughout Montague’s drawings is the message of hope for a people who have endured so much, yet have such strength, passion and faith in the future.

“I was initially motivated to create these drawings,” Montague explains, “by an amazing story I heard about one of the GVN volunteers in Haiti. A small Haitian boy had approached the volunteer, Andrea Suica, and asked her for food. All Andrea had was a granola bar, which she gave him. She expected the famished child to immediately eat the granola, yet two other starving boys joined him and he broke the bar into thirds to share with them. When a fourth child ran up, the first boy broke his tiny third in half to share yet again. Andrea was certain that this was all the boys had eaten that day.”

“I was utterly awed and humbled by the pure generosity of these children, and decided to pay tribute to the Haitian spirit through my artwork.”
