What are we working on now?

The Huayllarccohca community

The Huayllarccocha community is located in the mountains, a couple of miles away from Cusco. The community mainly lives from the cultivation of potato crops and the breeding of animals. Some inhabitants go to Cusco to work on construction projects or in shops.

The average number of children per family is 6. The average monthly income per family is $50.

Unemployment and alcoholism are the two main curses in the community. The children experience them every day in several different ways:

  1. Some of the kids wear torn clothes, shoes without soles or shoe laces. Others donīt go to school because their parents cannot afford the 30 cents ( = 10 dollar cents) for the bus to go to Cusco.
  2. Because they only eat potatoes, the children suffer from huge deficiencies and their bodies do not absorb the vitamins given by the Wara association properly.
  3. Their dental hygiene is bad. As the community cannot afford the stabilization work that would be necessary, the children drink the water from the river that is also used as a sewer by the inhabitants.
  4. Some of the children, even very young ones, have to take care of their younger siblings when their parents go to work.

Thanks to the work of the Wara Association conditions are improving significatly for the children of the Huayllarccocha community. Please make a donation or sponsor a child to allow Wara to continue their amazing work.
