CWWC Gataka School

Amidst trash piles and shanty villages, children and chickens, commerce and poverty of the large slum located outside of Nairobi, Kenya, there exists the Christian Women Works of Charity Center- a multipurpose facility providing the community with a school for local AIDS orphans and vulnerable children, a feeding program for the other school children residing in Kware slum, and the only AIDS voluntary counseling and testing center in the vicinity. Founded in 1994 in part by Mary Ndirangu and directed by Maureen Abongo, “The Center”, as it is affectionately called, currently serves 170 local children who would have no access to food, medical care, clothing, counseling, education, or opportunity otherwise.

In response to the success of the Kware location, and seeing the impact the foundation has had on the lives of the children who participate in the program, the Christian Women Works of Charity have recently expanded to the nearby quarry slums of Gataka. Due to lack of funds, the new school is made of corrugated tin siding and rests on borrowed land. However, this is all about to change. A group of students and community members from Charleston, South Carolina are raising funds to build a permanent school structure on land that CWWC will own. The monetary goal is $20,000- which will buy the land on which the school will reside, all of the building supplies, as well a Kenyan contractor and laborers. It is the student’s hope that the Gataka school will be able to provide the same services as the Center has done for the past 13 years, including psychological support to orphaned and vulnerable children, home based care and counseling, group therapy, voluntary counseling and testing, advocacy, income generating activities, and job training for young adults.

Upcoming fundraisers to support CWWC include:

  • South Carolina Bike Tour- in which each participant would be sponsored and/or raise $500 for the Gataka School.
  • Photography/Art Sales- of the children and the Gataka Slum area.
  • Ongoing Benefit Parties- to raise money and awareness
