Peru faces high levels of poverty and inequality with poverty levels significantly higher in rural areas. The GVN Foundation is working with two key projects in Peru. Both projects are focused on providing women and children in rural areas with the education and training they need to step out of poverty.
Hogar Mercedes de Jesus
This orphanage that provides a home for orphans as well as children from families who are too poverty stricken to care for them. The orphanage is located in a small town called Anta, about one hour outside of Cusco. The twenty-nine girls who live at the orphanage are between the ages of four and seventeen. In addition, the orphanage now runs a nutrition program to support the children in the surrounding communities.

Huchuy Yachaq is a community center in the Hermanos Ayer community near Cusco. The objective of the center is to improve the quality of life of the children and youth that are living in the community. This is achieved through three programs. First, their education program provides a library and homework support. Second, their family and community program provides workshops and families, as well as pyschosocial support from violent families. Third, their capacity-building program is empowering the mothers of the community by teaching them vocational skills.
